Herb Nesbitt

Herb Nesbitt

H.H.J. Nesbitt is often recognizable as the face of convocation at Carleton University.

Nesbitt was first honoured as the Marshall of Convocation in 1949, and presided over the pomp and formality of Carleton’s graduation ceremonies for 49 years. In 2001, the newly renovated biology building was renamed the H.H.J. Nesbitt building in recognition of Nesbitt’s dedication to the biology department and academic contribution to the University. Nesbitt, an Ottawa native, began his life long career at Carleton as an evening lecturer for the Department of Biology, researching on entomology and arachnids. He gained international respect and recognition for himself and for his department. Nesbitt’s correspondence and academic notes regarding involvement with a variety of university committees can be found within this collection.
