Michael Gnarowski

Professor, poet, editor and critic, Michael Gnarowski was born in Shanghai, China in 1934. He studied at McGill University (B.A., 1956), Indiana University (1959), the Université de Montréal (M.A., 1960), and received his Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Ottawa in 1967.

Dr. Gnarowski has worked on various poetry and literary publications throughout his career, and has been an advocate of small press publishing in Canada. While he was an undergraduate at McGill, Dr. Gnarowski began to publish his poetry in the magazine, Yes (1956-1970) which he also co-edited with Irving Layton and Raymond Souster. He continued to reinforce his creative writing with editing and publishing activities in both Montreal and Ottawa. He was involved with several literary periodicals such as: Le Chien d'or/The Golden Dog (1970-1972), Delta/Delta Canada with Louis Dudek, Golden Dog Press (1971-1985), and Tecumseh Press. He was also series editor for McGraw-Hill Ryerson's Critical Views on Canadian Writers Series (1969-1977) and co-edited Canadian Poetry (1977- ) with David Bentley.

Michael Gnarowski teaching an English seminar at Carleton University, ca. 1978.He taught English at the University of Sherbrooke from 1961-62; at Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) Ontario from 1962-65; was an assistant professor of English at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) from 1966-72; Carleton University from 1972 onwards. Dr. Gnarowski is currently Professor Emeritus in Carleton University’s English Department. His areas of particular interest include Canadian literature, modernist writing and Canadian poetry (19th century and modern). He has published a book of his own poetry, Postscript for St. James Street in 1965 (Delta Press), and has since edited and compiled over fifteen other books. He also co-edited The Making of Modern Poetry in Canada with Louis Dudek, which was published by Ryerson Press in 1967. Dr. Gnarowski was also the General-Editor of the Carleton Library Series (1972-1993) and Carleton University Press (1981-1993).

Michael Gnarowski continues to be involved in the effort to promote Canadian authors and writers, editing and publishing criticism and anthologies of Canadian poetry. He is currently Series Editor of Voyageur Canadian Classics with the Dundurn Group and General Editor of The Fiction of Hugh MacLennan with McGill-Queen’s University Press.
